Thomas Jefferson was third president of the United States. He was one of the principal writers of the Declaration of Independence. He was also the founder of the Democratic-Republican Party that went on to dominate the world of American politics for the next 25 years.

Here are some fun facts about Thomas Jefferson:

  • He was the first US president that started shaking hands with people instead of bowing.
  • He was the first president who had a grandchild who was born in the White House.
  • Thomas Jefferson is one of the two US presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence.
  • After Jefferson was sworn as the president, he went back to his boarding house for dinner. On arriving, every seat in the dining room was taken up and no one stood to offer him a seat. However, a wife of a senator from Kentucky noticed him standing and offered her seat to him which he declined.
  • Jefferson's personal library had around 6,000 books. These books were purchased from him by the US for $23,950 and became the foundation of the Library of Congress.
  • He had a pet mockingbird called Dick. Whenever he had the time, he would allow the bird to ride on his shoulder. The bird lived in the White House study and Jefferson had taught him to take pieces of food that he held between his lips during meal times.
  • The bears that were brought back from Lewis and Clark's expedition were displayed on the lawns of the White House in cages.
  • Thomas Jefferson wrote his own epitaph, which is even present today at his Monticello Estate in Virginia. The epitaph makes no mention of him having been the president of United States.
  • He not only founded but also designed and built the University of Virginia.
  • Every morning, Jefferson took a cold foot bath. This ritual was followed for 60 long years.
