- Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. He was a sickly child who suffered from asthma and many other illnesses.
- His family was quite wealthy and he spent time traveling to Europe and Egypt.
- As a youngster, Roosevelt took up boxing as a sport to help him build up his immunity and body.
- Roosevelt was educated early in his life by his aunt. Thereafter, he joined Harvard University and then went to Columbia Law School. However, he stayed at Columbia only for a year. He dropped out to start his political career.
- In 1882, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Assembly and he was the youngest member of the Assembly.
- In 1884, he moved to Dakota Territory where he worked and lived as a cattle rancher.
- Roosevelt was the Commissioner of the US Civil Service from 1889 to 1895.
- He was the president of the New York City Police Board from 1895 to 1897.
