Significant Facts Of Theodore Roosevelt  

Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States when William McKinley, the 25th president, was shot. He became the youngest person to become a president at the age of 42. In 1904, he was the Republican presidential candidate and his running mate was Charles W. Fairbanks. Roosevelt won a second term in office winning 336 electoral votes out of a total of 476.

Here are some significant facts on Theodore Roosevelt.

  • Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. He was a sickly child who suffered from asthma and many other illnesses.
  • His family was quite wealthy and he spent time traveling to Europe and Egypt.
  • As a youngster, Roosevelt took up boxing as a sport to help him build up his immunity and body.
  • Roosevelt was educated early in his life by his aunt. Thereafter, he joined Harvard University and then went to Columbia Law School. However, he stayed at Columbia only for a year. He dropped out to start his political career.
  • In 1882, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Assembly and he was the youngest member of the Assembly.
  • In 1884, he moved to Dakota Territory where he worked and lived as a cattle rancher.
  • Roosevelt was the Commissioner of the US Civil Service from 1889 to 1895.
  • He was the president of the New York City Police Board from 1895 to 1897.
  • He was also the governor of New York from 1898 to 1900.
  • Monroe Doctrine is an important American foreign policy. It states that the western hemisphere cannot be encroached upon by foreign countries. Roosevelt was instrumental in adding the Roosevelt Corollary to this policy which states that US had the responsibility to step in with necessary force in Latin America so that it could enforce the Monroe Doctrine.
  • Roosevelt was responsible for enforcing many policies that were extremely progressive and these helped to lay the foundation for important reforms that took place in the 20th century.
