Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States. He became the president on September 14, 1901 when President William McKinley was shot and killed on September 6, 1901. Roosevelt was 42 years old then, making him the youngest person to become a president.

Here are some facts on President Theodore Roosevelt:

  • He was the first US president to fly in an airplane. This was achieved on October 11, 1910 when he flew for four minutes in an airplane constructed by the Wright Brothers.
  • Theodore Roosevelt was younger than John F. Kennedy when he became the president after William McKinley was shot and killed.
  • In 1906, Roosevelt went for a trip to Panama, making him the first US president to leave continental United States.
  • Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for being the person who negotiated peace between the Russians and Japanese. He was also the first American to ever win this prize.
  • On October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was shot at close range while he was getting ready to give a speech as the presidential candidate for the Bull Moose Party. The bullet entered his lung, but he first finished his speech and then went to the hospital.
  • When Roosevelt was inaugurated, he wore a ring that contained a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair.
  • Roosevelt was blind in the left eye because of boxing injury.
  • Theodore Roosevelt had a photographic memory, and he could read an entire page in the time that it took a person to read a single sentence.
