- Hayes was the first US president who used a telephone while in office. The first telephone was installed in 1879 in the White House.
- He is the only US president who was wounded in the American Civil War. There were other US presidents that took part in the War, but were never wounded.
- His wife, Lucy, did not allow alcohol, smoking, dancing and playing cards in the White House. As a result she earned the nickname Lemonade Lucy.
- Rutherford Hayes and Lucy held the first Easter egg roll in the lawns of the White House. This tradition continues even today.
- Hayes was named after his father, Rutherford Hayes, and his mother Sophia Birchard.
- Hayes never knew his father as he died around 10 weeks before Hayes was born.
- Hayes became the first US president to visit the West Coast which he did in 1880.
- Even though Hayes lost the popular vote by 250,000 votes, he managed to win the election by one electoral vote.
- Hayes did not run for a second term. He had made a pledge that he would stay in office for only one term. As a result he retired in 1881.
- After leaving the presidency, Hayes spent his time on the Board of Trustees of the Ohio State University, which he founded while he was the governor of Ohio.
- He spent time providing scholarships for African Americans so that they could pursue further studies.
