How Did Rutherford B Hayes Die ?
Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born on October 4, 1822. He was the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Besides being the president, Hayes was also lawyer and a military leader. He came to power in the highly controversial presidential election of 1876. He was elected by one electoral vote. |
Hayes is the only US president till date whose election was decided by a Congressional Committee. He lost the popular vote to Samuel Tilden.
Hayes' father, also Rutherford, was a storekeeper. He died around 10 weeks before Hayes was born. This made him the second president of the US who was born after the death of his father. The first was Andrew Jackson. Hayes' mother, Sophie Birchard, had a brother named Sardis Birchard, who lived with the Hayes family. He ended up being the father figure in Hayes' life. Birchard taught Hayes Latin and Ancient Greek, and was instrumental in forging his early education. Birchard and Hayes remained close throughout their lives.
On March 3, 1877, Hayes took the oath of office in the White House, which was then known as the Executive Mansion. This was done in secrecy as the outgoing President Grant was afraid that Samuel Tilden's supporters would try to sabotage a public inauguration ceremony. Hayes became the first US president to take the oath of office in the White House. On March 5, 1877, Hayes once again took the oath publicly at the US Capitol.
During his inaugural address, Hayes had proposed a one-term limit for presidents but recommended that the term duration be increased to 6 years. When it was time for re-election in 1880, Hayes did not attempt for it as he had made a promise that he would not run for a second term.
After he left the office, he joined the Board of Trustees of the Ohio State University, the school that he founded when he was the governor of Ohio. He continued in this position until he died.
Hayes died on January 17, 1893 in Fremont, Ohio following complications that set in after a heart attack. Initially he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery. However, after the state of Ohio received his home for the formation of the Spiegel Grove State Park, Hayes was reburied in the Park in 1915.
