He started his political career in 1946 when he was elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives where he represented the 12 Congressional District of California. Then, against as a Republican, he was elected to the US Senate in 1950. When Dwight E Eisenhower, a Republican presidential candidate, was running for president in 1952, he selected Richard Nixon as his running mate. On successfully winning the 1952 presidential election, Richard Nixon became the youngest vice president in the history of the United States.
Thereafter, he stood for the presidential elections in 1960 but lost to John F. Kennedy. After that he tried to become the governor of California in 1962, but also lost that election. Thereafter, he announced that he was retiring from politics only to make a successful comeback in 1968 to win the presidential election.
Nixon won the presidential election against the then vice president Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace, the governor of Alabama.
On becoming the president, Nixon was very successful with his foreign policies. He made peace with China and as a result Chinese goods could be sold in the US. In addition, he was the first US president to travel to China. He also visited the Soviet Union.
He won the next election in 1972 with one of the biggest margins in the history of the United States. This time too he was the Republican presidential candidate, and he won against George McGovern, who was the Democratic presidential candidate.
