How Did Martin Van Buren Help The World ?
Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York. He was of Dutch origins and grew up in a poor family. His father had a tavern where he worked after finishing with his classes at the local school. He finished his formal education at the age 14, after which he studied law. He was admitted into the Bar in 1803. |
As a president, Martin Van Buren was considered to be quite average because nothing major happened during his presidency. However, the Panic of 1837 resulted in the formation of an Independent Treasury. The US was having strained relationship with Canada but Van Buren's stance ensured that the events did not escalate to war. In addition, he was all for maintaining sectional balance and that is why there was a delay in admitting Texas into the Union which occurred only in 1845.
When Van Buren became the president, the country was facing the start of the depression known as Panic of 1837. This depression lasted until 1845 during which more than 900 banks closed down and many people were unemployed. However, to protect the deposit of people's money in the banks, Van Buren fought to establish an Independent Treasury.
It was during Van Buren's presidency that the US relations with Canada, a Britain territory, became strained. The Aroostook War in 1839 was non-combat conflict that took place along the Maine-Canada border. When the authorities in Maine tried to send the Canadians back, militia were called to ensure peace. It was Van Buren who negotiated peace with Canada through General Winfield Scott. This prevented an armed conflict in the region.
