How And When Did Martin Van Buren Die ?
Martin Van Buren was the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841. Before becoming the president, Van Buren was the eighth vice president, and the tenth Secretary of State under President Andrew Johnson. |
He was the first US president who was not of British origin. He was from Dutch descent. He was also the first president who was born an American citizen. Van Buren also has the distinction of being the only US president who did not have English as his first language as his mother tongue was Dutch.
Martin Van Buren served only one term as president. During his tenure, the country faced a lot of economic problems along with the problems associated with the Aroostook War and strained relations with Britain and her colonies in Canada.
Although Van Buren had a close call with the popular vote, he lost out on the electoral votes and this was instrumental in seeing him out of office. In 1848, he once again ran for the presidency but this time on the ticket of a third part called Free Soil Party.
In the fall of 1861, Van Buren ended up catching pneumonia which saw him falling extremely ill. He took to his bed. However, he never recovered from this illness as on July 24, 1862, Van Buren died due to bronchial asthma and heart failure. He was 79 years old at that time.
He died in his Lindenwald Estate in Kinderhook. After his death, he was buried in the Kinderhook Cemetery. Today, a commemorative plaque remembering and honoring Martin Van Buren can be found at the parking lot of the Kinderhook Reformed Dutch Church.
