Lyndon B Johnson was born on August 27 of 1908 in Stonewall, Texas. His parents were Sam Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines Johnson. He grew up in poverty, and had worked his way up in life. He worked in Southwest Texas State Teachers College, known as Texas University today in San Macros. |
In 1931, Johnson quit teaching, and went to serve as the secretary to Texas Congressman Richard Kleberg in Washington. When he was coming back to Austin, he met Claudia Alta and married her in San Antonio on November 17, 1934. They had two daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci Baines.
In 1935, he returned to Texas and served the National Youth Administration as the Director.
In 1937, he served the Tenth Congressional District, and also served in the US House of Representatives.
He fought for rural electrification and elimination of waste. He tried to get elected to the Senate in 1941 but failed in his attempt. However, in his next attempt in 1948 he won. He became the Senate majority leader in 1955. In 1955, Johnson also suffered from a major stroke which almost killed him.
In 1960, he stood as John F Kennedy’s running mate, and was elected as Vice President. He was sent on various missions all over the world which included a trip to Vietnam.
On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States. As a vice president, Johnson had already proved his credibility by advising Kennedy on several issues including the Vietnam War, and Cuban Crisis.
