John Tyler Biography

John Tyler was born in Virginia on March 29, 1790. No one knew much about his childhood, but it is known that he grew up on a plantation in Virginia. His mother died when he was only seven years old. When he was twelve years old, he went to the William and Mary Preparatory school.

He graduated and then studied law. He was admitted to the Bar in 1809. His father was John, a planter who supported the American Revolution, was a close associate of Thomas Jefferson, and also was in politics. His mother, Mary, died when he was 7. He had five sisters and two brothers. He was married to Letitia Christian. She suffered a stroke and died while he was a president. He married once again, and his second wife was Julia Gardner. In total, John Tyler had sixteen children, six daughters and eight sons.

John Tyler was the member of the House of Representatives before he was the President. He joined the Militia, but never fought any wars. He fought many unconstitutional laws vigorously. He resigned from the House of Representatives. He served as the governor of Virginia from 1825 to 1827. He then became a senator.

John Tyler served as the Vice President to William Henry Harrison in 1840. He was from the south, and was a good balancing factor. When Harrison died, he became the President and was sworn in on April 6, 1841. Harrison was in office only for 2 months. He was responsible for the border between Maine and Canada.
