John Adams Views On Slavery
It is a common belief of most people that all the Founding Fathers of America were pro-slavery and were racists and hypocrites. However, this is not true, as the time, politics, thoughts and strife were very different than what we see today. We all live in an independent world were slavery does not or cannot exist. People today know far too much about human rights. |
A lot of people paint a false picture about the Founding Fathers of America, and their views on slavery. Several presidents were actually shown in bad light on the issue of slavery. Slaves were not treated badly to start with. In many cases, they were respected and provided for. So the issue of slavery is not what it is made to be for us today.
The American Revolution was at the cross roads, and there were several issues affecting it with one clan of people threatening the other. People were leading very insecure lives. So freeing the slaves seemed would add more confusion and also loose majority. It was not in the hands of founding fathers like John Adams alone to ban slavery from the country. John Adams has been quoted on saying that his opinions on slavery were always transparent. He never owned a slave, and that it should speak about his character and view on the issue of slavery.
John Adams was the second president of the United States and is considered as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States apart from George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Even George Washington thought slavery was a forced bondage which should be banned. However, as politicians they were bound to unanimous decisions, and were also dealing with two sets of people having different views; one was pro-slavery, while the other was anti-slavery.
