The Vietnam War did more damage to Ford’s popularity with the American people. However, Carter won with a very narrow margin. Jimmy Carter was also the former state senator and governor of Georgia. Carter was never too popular on the national level.
However, the Watergate Scandal gave him a benefit as an outsider in the Washington politics. People mistrusted and disregarded anyone from Washington after the Watergate Scandal. He managed to capture a lot of nominations and delegates for his campaign. Carter easily won the nomination as the candidate in the 1976 Democratic National Convention. He chose Walter Mondale as his running mate. Mondale was the senator of Minnesota.
Soon the competition for presidency transformed into a competition between candidates, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, from just a competition between parties. However, Ford defeated Reagan at the National Convention of the Republicans, and the race boiled down to Ford and Carter.
