How Did James Madison Die ?
James Madison lived a very long life. He eventually passed away when he was 85 years old in Montpelier, Virginia in 1836. However, all was not smooth sailing for him. |
His later years were an agony for him as he constantly worried about his legacy. He was also worried about how he would make himself understood by his countrymen. He became increasingly obsessed with the documents and letters in his possession. He would add and delete words, change the days and dates and even correct sentences. The evidence can be seen in one of his letters to Jefferson where he had criticized Lafayette. He had struck out many original parts and even had written some lines in Jefferson’s handwriting as well. In the year 1829, he was chosen to revise the Virginia state constitution. This was also part of his undoing as he was in despair over the 3/5 ratio compromise. He was dejected as the Virginians were unable to impartially resolve the issue. He himself was in a dilemma over the matter of slavery.
His last six years had a lot of financial troubles. There were times when he collapsed due to mental agony. The years 1831 and 1832 saw him bedridden most of the time.
Though he died a normal death due to old age, his health must have failed due to all of his agonizing over matters that he thought could never be resolved. He was the last of the Founding Father to die. He now lies at peace in the Madison Family Cemetery at Montpelier.
