James Madison is from Virginia, a very illustrious state as we shall see later on. Madison was born on March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, King George County, Virginia. His mother was also from Port Conway which is also the place of her birth. His father was the largest landowner in Orange County, Virginia, and also one of its leading citizens. Virginia is on the Atlantic Coast and is towards the South. It is also called “Old Dominion” affectionately and also has another nickname “the Mother of Presidents”. That is because it has given 8 presidents, of which Madison is one, to the United States.
He was instrumental in framing the Virginia constitution. It is interesting to note that Madison used the Virginia Declaration of Rights as the basis for the first ten amendments.
He married Dolley Madison in the year 1794 also in West Virginia. She was from North Carolina. Madison died in his home state of Virginia at Montpelier in 1836.
The state began as the Virginia colony in 1607, thanks to the Virginia Company of London which established Virginia as the first permanent New World English Colony. It was one of the 13 colonies in the American Revolution.
Its state government is home to the oldest legislature in America. The cities and counties are all equal. It does not allow its governors to serve consecutive terms. Its most populated city is Virginia Beach.
Today, the state boasts of around 8 million Virginians.
