When Was James A Garfield Assassinated ?
The 20th President of America, James Abram Garfield served the United States for only a short three months. At 199 days of administration after his inauguration, he lost his life. The term he served in office is marked as the second shortest in history, with that of William Henry Harrison as first. |
It was only a short while that Garfield was able to take pleasure in his triumph. On July 2, 1881, Charles J. Guiteau’s caused his short term in office using a revolver. Resentful for not acquiring a consular post, the attorney shot him. Garfield was scheduled to depart from Washington that day. The event happened as he was passing along Sixth Street Station, a railroad station in Washington, on his way to visit Williams College, his alma mater; traveling with his children, James and Harry, and Secretary of State James G. Blaine. He was supposed to give a speech in the school.
The assassination took place as the President was in the Station. Guiteau approached him with a gun in hand aimed at Garfield. He was shot twice, once in the arm and the other touched a part of his spine. It is said that Guiteau thoroughly organized this assassination, even asking a cab driver to bring him to jail after the deed was completed.
Garfield was rushed to the hospital where one of the bullets was taken out of his body, but the other remained undetected by the doctors. This resulted in the spread of infection in his body. On September 19, 1881, which was a Monday, Garfield lost his life in Long Branch, New Jersey.
