What Was James Buchanan Known For ?
James Buchanan’s presidency had certain unique elements which continue to remain to this day. Other than the fact that he was the only House of Representatives member from Pennsylvania to occupy the presidency, he was also the only bachelor president. |
On the political front, James Buchanan’s legacy is not very impressive. Though he tried his best to ensure the unity of the American Union, his lack of judgment on certain crucial matters led to the American Civil War. Theoretically, he can be called a statesman and a diplomat to the core as he emphasized on dialogue all throughout his presidential tenure despite knowing that the secessionists were uncompromising in their stand.
Other than that, Johan Buchanan, who happened to belong from the Northeastern part of United States, had deep sympathy for the slave owners and their rights. Till the last moment, he stood by his stand to support them.
Historians have always been quite harsh on Buchanan for his failure to tackle session. In fact, he is ranked by many historians as one of the worst presidents in the history of United States. This is the reason why the Union was not quite forthcoming in honoring the former president of United States. Even the bronze granite memorial in his honor was not unveiled as late as 1930.
Considering the turmoil that United States was going through during those turbulent times, it would not be just to put the entire blame on John Buchanan’s presidency for the Civil War. He was one of those few leaders who tried but failed to prevent the unpreventable.
