What Battles Was James Buchanan In During The Civil War ?
It would not be wrong to say that James Buchanan was the last president before the formal commencement of the Civil War in United States. Historians cite his lack of judgment and decision making as being responsible for increasing the threat of civil war. The other factor that some believe, escalated the conflict was Buchanan’s insistence on the right of the states to secede from the union. |
During the final years of his presidency, United States witnessed bitter hostility between the southern and the northern states. In 1958, the Republican Party, which had taken control of both houses of the Congress, was prevented from going ahead with its policies by either Southern members’ votes or by veto by the president himself.
This led to escalation of the conflict. Buchanan’s own party which was sharply divided on sectional lines witnessed a split from between in 1860. This led to the two sides nominating different candidates for the 1861 presidential elections. Till last moment, Buchanan was hopeful of a compromise between the two warring factions.
However, things fell apart when South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860 along with 6 other states and formed the Confederate of America. Towards 1961, when Buchanan’s term was about to expire, the Union had lost major areas of control in the seceded states. And although Buchanan made initial attempts to send reinforcements for the Union’s troops, he was forced to back off in the wake of retaliation. Historians note that he made no effort to prepare for what later went to become a full fledged US Civil War.
