James Buchanan And Political Party

In the galaxy of several popular presidents of United States of America, James Buchanan has a special place. Although many might just know about him for the fact that he preceded Abraham Lincoln as 15th President of United States of America. However, many also miss out the fact that he was the only bachelor to serve as the President of United States of America. His political party was the Democratic Party even though he viewed himself as a dedicated federalist.

Even though James Buchanan took over the reins of a deeply divided country and tried hard to maintain peace, he is often viewed by his critics as someone who was lacking the will to bring about consensus among warring factions. In fact, many call him as one of the worst presidents that the United States ever had.

Despite being from the northern state of Pennsylvania, he was seen as someone who was sympathetic to the southern viewpoint. This is the reason why some claim that he remained quiet on the issue of whether to go to war if the southern states declared secession from the union.

John Buchanan began his political career in 1814 when he was elected to the House of Representative and the US Congress on a Federalist Party ticket. For some time, his political career seemed to go nowhere from there as the Federalist party had become defunct, and he was sent to Russia to serve as American Ambassador. However, the turning point in his career came when he was offered the post of Secretary of State by then president James K Polk.

He was later offered Democratic nomination for presidency in 1856. During his tenure, he presided over the disputes between the warring factions of the United States with a hope of brokering some kind of peace, even though he was seen as sympathetic to the rights of slave owners. However, all his efforts went in vain, and United States was plunged into Civil War towards the end of his tenure.

What-Battles-Was-James-Buchanan-In-During-The-Civil-War      It would not be wrong to say that James Buchanan was the last president before the formal commencement of the Civil War in United States. Historians cite his lack of judgment and decision making as being responsible for increasing the threat of civil war. The other factor that some believe, escalated the conflict was Buchanan’s insistence on the right of the states to secede from the union. More..
