What Were Some Gerald Ford Accomplishments ?

Ford was nominated to take Agnew's position, the first time the vice presidential vacancy provision of the 25th Amendment had been implemented. On August 9, 1974, Ford assumed the presidency which made him the only person to assume the vice presidency and the presidency without having been voted into either office.

On August 20, Ford was nominated as the vice president. On September 8, 1974, Proclamation 4311 was issued by Ford, which gave Nixon a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes he may have committed against the United States while President. Ford introduced a conditional amnesty program for Vietnam War draft dodgers who had escaped to countries such as Canada.

Ford decided to pardon Nixon for other reasons, chiefly the friendship he and Nixon shared. Ford also appeared before Congress on October 17, 1974 to give sworn testimony.

Ford appointed William Coleman as Secretary of Transportation who was the second African American to serve in a presidential cabinet and the first appointed in a Republican administration. George H. W. Bush was selected by him as his connection to the People's Republic of China in 1974 and then Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in late 1975.

Ford ran a budget shortage every year he was President. In spite of his reservations about how this program ultimately would be funded in an era of tight public budgeting, Ford signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, which established special education throughout the US. Ford signed into law income tax returns as part of the Tax Reduction Act of 1975 to improve the economy in March 1975.
