How Many Children Did George Washington Have ?

As husband and wife, Martha and George Washington had no children together, and Washington raised the surviving children of Martha. In fact, George Washington outlived his two stepchildren, and proved to be a great father to them and loved them like his own children.
In 1773, Patsy Custis, the step daughter of George Washington, died in his arms. She was suffering from a health condition called epilepsy since she was 16. John, the lone surviving son of Martha returned home from his college to be at his mother’s side. However, in September 1781, when John was 26 years old he decided to serve as an impromptu aide for the British during the Siege of Yorktown.
But two weeks after the British troops were defeated virtually signaling the end of the American Revolution, Jackie Custis died of what was known as ‘camp fever’ or probably meningitis. But John had two sons from his marriage, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis. The Washingtons brought up these children besides taking care of the both the families of Dandriges and Washingtons.
During George Washington’s Presidency, it was Eleanor Parke Custis, his step granddaughter, who used to entertain the guests at the New York City’s presidential mansions, and at Philadelphia and at Mount Vernon. In 1799, she married George Washington’s nephew.
