George W Bush Biography

George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946. He was the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, and the 46th Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2005. Bush was the eldest son of George H. W. Bush, the 41st President, and Barbara Bush.

Bush graduated from Yale University in 1968, and Harvard Business School in 1975. He worked in the oil business of his family. Shortly after, he married Laura Welch in 1977. He then was the co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He was elected President in 2000, receiving a majority of the electoral votes.

Eight months after Bush’s first term as president, terrorist attack occurred in September 11, 2001. Bush announced a global War on Terrorism in the response. He then ordered an intrusion of Afghanistan in the same year and Iraq in 2003. He signed into the No Child Left behind Act, law broad tax cuts and Medicare prescription drug benefits for seniors.

Bush became candidate for re-election against Democratic Senator John Kerry in 2004 and was successful. He gathered 50.7 percent of the popular vote as compared to his opponent’s 48.3 percent. After re-election, Bush received heated criticism from conservatives. In 2005, the Administration of Bush dealt with criticism over its dealing of Hurricane Katrina. In December 2007, the US entered the longest post-World War II recession which prompted the Bush Administration to take more control of the economy, performing multiple economic stimulus packages. Even though Bush was a popular president for most of his first term, his popularity declined sharply during his second term. After leaving office, Bush went to Texas. He is currently writing a book about his presidency, and is a public speaker.
