George Herbert Walker Bush was born on June 12, 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts. His father, Prescott S. Bush, was a wealthy businessman and a Senator. George Bush has four siblings, three brothers and one sister. |
George Bush was raised in a suburb in New York. Attending private schools, George Bush was a student leader at Phillips Academy in Andover. After completing his high school, Bush gifted himself for his 18th birthday a place in the armed forces. During World War II, as the youngest pilot in the Navy, he flew 58 combat missions and became a lieutenant. On one such mission over the Pacific he was shot down by Japanese antiaircraft fire and fell into the waters. He was later rescued by a U.S submarine. Recognizing his bravery in action, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Bush pursued his education at the Yale University. He excelled in sports as well and captained the baseball team and was an active member of the Phi Beta Kappa. In January 1945, he married Barbara Pierce and fathered six children. One boy, Robin, died when he was a child. He had four sons and one daughter. One of the sons, George W. Bush, went on to become the 43rd President of the United States.
George H W Bush started his lucrative career in the oil industry in Texas. Later, he followed his father’s footsteps and jumped into active public service and politics. He began his political career as a two time Representative to Congress from Texas. But his attempts to get into the Senate failed on two occasions. Meanwhile, George H W Bush held many coveted positions like being the Ambassador to the United Nations, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Director of the CIA and also the Chief of the U.S Liaison Office in China.
The year 1980 saw George H W Bush being chosen as a running mate by President Ronald Reagan despite losing the Republican nomination as President. Bush’s tenure as Vice President saw him handle wide ranging important responsibilities. Soon, in 1988, Bush succeeded in becoming the Republican nomination for President and together with Senator Dan Quayle of Indiana as his running mate, he defeated Michael Dukakis, the Massachusetts Governor by winning 54 percent of the popular vote and more than 80 percent of the Electoral College votes. George H W Bush went on to become the 41st President of the United States of America.
