Franklin Pierce was born on November 23, 1804 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. His siblings included four brothers, two sisters, and one half-sister. Pierce came from a family that had good history of political experience. His father, Benjamin Pierce, was a politically active person having taken part in the Revolutionary War, and later becoming the Governor of New Hampshire.

When Franklin Pierce, or Handsome Frank as he was fondly called, took office, he did not take oath on the Bible even when it was the tradition to do so. This was because Pierce felt that with the death of his son in a freak accident just two months before he took office was a judgment passed by God.
