When Franklin Pierce, or Handsome Frank as he was fondly called, took office, he did not take oath on the Bible even when it was the tradition to do so. This was because Pierce felt that with the death of his son in a freak accident just two months before he took office was a judgment passed by God.

Once Franklin Pierce was arrested for running over a woman while driving his carriage in Washington DC but the charges were dropped later.

Pierce was the only President to have retained the same cabinet unchanged during his four year tenure between 1853 and1857. Pierce was the second President who did not have a Vice President as the VP died soon after assuming office.

Pierce had no pets with him. But he kept with him one of the two tiny sleeve dogs that Commodore Perry brought for him from Japan. Pierce was the first President to install centralized heating systems in the official Presidential residence in the White House. During Christmas, Pierce was the first President to put a Christmas tree in the White House.
