President Eisenhower Facts

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Kansas in 1890. In high school, he was an excellent sportsman and in college, he played football. Thereafter, he joined work as a second lieutenant in Texas where he excelled in his given assignments. In 1916, he was married to Mamie Geneva Doud.

During the then ongoing Second World War in 1944, Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of the troops when invading France. He was awarded with the 5-star general honor. Later, he assumed the Presidency of Columbia University and later on, in 1951, he took over as the supreme command over the new NATO forces. Eisenhower was the only President of U.S to have served in World War I and II.

Eisenhower was part of the Republican Party. During campaigning for Presidency he became the first nominee to travel by airplane. He became the 34th President of the United States of America in 1952 after sweeping the 1952 elections with the popular slogan, “I like IKE.” He was the first President who was baptized after swearing-in. His vice-president was Richard Nixon. President Eisenhower made the first move to use Air Force One. He was also the first President to appear on color television when it was introduced. He was a good painter but painted only others’ drawings as he could not draw by himself.

In July 1955, Eisenhower eased the tensions between the U.S and Russia, the two big powers who had developed hydrogen bombs then, by proposing the exchanging of blueprints of each country’s military establishments.

Eisenhower was elected for a second term in November 1956 after he recovered from a sudden heart attack in September 1955. In 1957, when Little Rock High School witnessed communal tensions, President Eisenhower sent troops to protect black students. This was seen as an important milestone in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights legislation in 1960 that gave the right to vote to African Americans. He stopped serving the office in January 1961. And, after a long illness, he died on March 28, 1969.
