While his ancestry is English like most Americans, he hails from Plymouth Notch in Vermont where he was born. He was educated in and graduated from Amherst College and went on to study Law. He gave the Bar exam and became a lawyer.
Calvin Coolidge was an exemplary pubic speaker. But in private, he was a man of few words. He had once explained by writing, “The words of a President have an enormous weight, and ought not to be used indiscriminately.” He was called the “Silent Cal” in private.
An interesting experience was once noted by Coolidge’s wife Grace when in a dinner, a woman sitting next to Calvin Coolidge had retorted, “Mr. Coolidge, I've made a bet against a fellow who said it was impossible to get more than two words out of you.” Coolidge, replied without even looking at her, “You lose.”
His wit can be seen in his campaign slogan “Keep cool with Coolidge", and he also served White House visitors ice water.
Calvin Coolidge’s political journey to the post of President was quite steady from a local councilman to Governor to Vice-President, to the highest degree of a President. Although he succeeded President Harding, who died on a speaking tour, he was re-elected in the next elections.
Another interesting fact about Calvin’s Presidency is; he had taken the Oath of Presidency twice, one at the hands of his own father, a local Justice of Peace.
He became a writer, and died at the age of 60 due to coronary thrombosis.
