Bill Clinton And Impeachment Trial
| Bill Clinton, born on August 19, 1946, was the 42nd President of the United States of America. His term was from January 20, 1993 to January 20, 2001. He also served as the governor of Arkansas before becoming the President. He was the only second President of the United States to have been through an impeachment trial. However, he was acquitted as he was found not guilty. The impeachment trial took place in February of 1999. |
The basis for the impeachment trial was the alleged sexual harassment case by Monica Lewinsky and was brought in by Paula Jones in 1994. She was a former Arkansas State Employee. In the law suit filed by Paula Jones on May 8, 1991, it was alleged that she was summoned to the Governors room by the security Danny Fergusson in Little Rock Hotel. According to her statement, Clinton was sexually aggressive in his behavior and made inappropriate passes at her.
However, Clinton’s lawyer refuted it saying the lawsuit was meant to distract him from his duties and filed for an immunity claim. The court ruled against Clinton, and allowed further inquiry into the case. Later on, Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky came along. It came to light when the lawyers of Paula Jones were allowed to conduct further inquiry into sexual relationships that Clinton would have had within the Oval Office.
On December 5, 1997, the Jones lawyer had submitted a list of women’s name to the judge with whom Clinton could have had a sexual relationship. In that list, Monica Lewinsky’s name was present.
