Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States. He had several achievements as a president, and had also served in many organizations before his Presidency. He was elected as the military governor of Florida at the battle of New Orleans. He clearly dominated the American politics from 1820 to 1830. His main aim was to shape up the Democratic Party. |
However, one of the bad decisions he made was to support slavery, and removing the American Indians. He was known to be a very tough and adamant man, which earned him his nick name, The Old Hickory. As a mark of remembrance, his picture appears on the $20 bill of the United States. In the year 1837, Jackson managed to reduce the overall federal debt to the lowest amount ever in American history. President Jackson is the only President in the history of United States till date to have paid off the Federal Debt completely.
Andrew Jackson was completely against the Electoral College. He said that the power should be given to the deserving candidates, and rotated among the people who were suited for the roles. However, he did not succeed in implementing his decision. He had established a system called Rotation in Office, and declared it to be a leading principle.
The Indian removal affected Andrew Jackson’s political career deeply. It was one of the most controversial subjects of his career. It was almost like ethnic cleansing, and he was blamed for all the confusions he created with this decision. However, the Indian removal was not something that Jackson got involved after his Presidency, but he was involved earlier with it for several years.
