Why Was Ronald Reagan A Great President ?

Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the United States. However, he was unlike all the previous presidents. He turned to politics after having a successful career as a radio sports announcer, Hollywood actor and television host. He was first elected as the governor of California in 1966 and went on to serve for 8 years.

He ran for the presidency in 1968 and 1979 but was unsuccessful. However, in 1980, America was facing economic problems and foreign policy problems, and that is the time Reagan won as a Republican candidate defeating Jimmy Carter in the elections.

Ronald Reagan is considered to be a great president due to many reasons. At the time that he took the office, the public opinion on the government was a very low point. However, with Reagan in the highest office, he made the American public believe in themselves. This ensured that he got elected for a second term in 1984.

During his 8 years in office, he cut taxes, increased the defense budge, and used the defense strength of the US to negotiate arms control deal with the Soviet Union. His first task as the president was to boost the economy, reduce taxes and balance the federal budget. He also worked towards reducing the size and authority of the federal government.

Once the economy became stable in 1983 after Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker increased interest rates to bring down inflation and do away with the recession, Reagan turned his attention to the foreign policy of the country. He then approached the Congress to approve the military budget which had increased substantially. He wanted to use the military strength to negotiate an arms reduction deal with the Soviets. However, he could not do much in his first term.

However, the people viewed him as a stable leader and the fact that the economy was growing also endeared him. This led to him winning a second term in office. Finally in 1987, he signed a treaty with Soviet Union's new leader Mikhail Gorbachev to reduce the number of nuclear missile heads. This was his biggest political success, and it is mainly because of this and resurgence in the American economy that he is considered to be a great president.
