When Did Abraham Lincoln Become President ?

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was instrumental in seeing the nation through the American Civil War, preserving the Union, and putting an end to slavery.

Abraham Lincoln became the president in March 1861 when he officially took the office. However, the elections were held in November 1860. Prior to becoming the president, Lincoln was a lawyer, a legislator in the state of Illinois, and a member of the US House of Representatives. He tried to stand for elections to the US Senate twice, but lost on both counts.

Lincoln was against slavery spreading to the rest of the Union, and was extremely vocal about this. He won the Republican Party nomination as the presidential candidate in 1860, and was elected the following year.

During his term, the Confederate States of America who had seceded were defeated in the American Civil War. However, he had other things to his credit too. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and he also facilitated the enactment of the Thirteenth Amendment in the US Constitution.

On May 9 and May 10, 1860 the Illinois Republican Party held its State Convention in Decatur. It was during this convention that Lincoln was endorsed as the presidential candidate. Then on May 18, the Republican National Convention was held in Chicago where Lincoln became the frontrunner after he defeated potential candidates like William H. Seward and Salmon P. Chase.

When Lincoln won the nomination, it caused a lot of stir as many viewed Lincoln's views on slavery quite moderate compared to Seward and Chase. However, notwithstanding, Lincoln turned out to be a force to reckon even though he did not give a single speech on the run up to the elections. Instead all the speeches were given by other Republican speakers who concentrated first on highlight the goals of the party and second on Lincoln's life story so that people would know he came from a poor family. This campaign was very successful, and Lincoln won the elections on November 6, 1860.
