What US President Was Born In A Town Named Caldwell ?

Caldwell is actually a borough located in the northwestern part of Essex County in New Jersey. It is around 16 miles from New York. Today, as per the latest US census, the population of the borough is around 7,584. However, the borough is also famous for another aspect.

Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president of the United States, was born in Caldwell. Cleveland is the only president in the history of American politics to serve two non-consecutive terms in office. Grover Cleveland was born March 18, 1837 to Reverend Richard Cleveland and Ann Neal Cleveland. Cleveland's father was a Presbyterian pastor, who was originally from Connecticut.

Cleveland was the eight other siblings, which included four brothers and four sisters. He was the fifth oldest of the 9 Cleveland children. Grover Cleveland was actually christened Stephen Grover Cleveland. However, he did not use his first name through his entire adult life preferring to go by the name Grover instead. He was named Stephen Grover after the first pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell.

Grover Cleveland lived in Caldwell for the first four years of his life. In 1841, the Cleveland family moved to Fayetteville, New York, where Cleveland spent majority of his childhood.

Caldwell became a borough on February 10, 1892 by a law passed by the New Jersey Legislature. This law was passed after a referendum was held on February 9. However, in 1981, the name changed to Township of the Borough of Caldwell. This was primarily done to take advantage of the revenue sharing policies of the federal government. However, on January 26, 1995, the township once again became a borough.

Today, the place where Grover Cleveland was born in Caldwell has been converted into a museum, and is open to the public. This was the Church's rectory.
