Youth In African American History
The youth in African American history have always been affected by the different circumstances and events in their lives. They have undergone experiences of enslavement, labor, difficulties in education etc. |
It may not be wrong to say that the youth in African American history have had issues with their self esteem. This is due to the constant racism that they had to face on a daily basis. Adding to the fact that the African Americans were initially into slavery just makes it all the more difficult for them to establish their identity,
However, these very youth have been known to lead boycotts, freedom rides and other rallies that took place in the south. They went to the extent of disobeying their parents and participating in civil movements and thus getting jailed for the same. They not only took part in demonstrations and rallies, but they also believed in the democratic system and this can be supported by the fact that over the past few years there has been a very high rate of voting among these youth. Having said this, there is also very little or no involvement of the African American youth in community service or any other kinds of civic engagement.
While everything is not very rosy about African American youth because statistics reveal that a large number of these young people may not have completed high school and a large number of them may also be unemployed. This may be attributed to the fact that the African American youth have experienced some grave types of economic, social and political exclusion, for years.
