American Flag History For Kids

The idea of dedicating a day to specifically celebrate the American Flag began as early as 1885. It was started by a schoolteacher named BJ Cigrand who advocated the concept of 'Flag Birthday' through various articles on the media and also public addresses.

In the year 1889, another kindergarten teacher named George Balch organized ceremonies at school to celebrate this day. The State Board of Education of New York adopted his idea of observing this special day at a later stage. In 1891, the Betsy Ross House which is situated in Philadelphia celebrated their first flag day. This was followed by the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution who observed Flag Day for the first time the following year.

The American Flag represents the struggle for independence by the colonies. The flag was initially approved by the congress in the year 1777. The initial flag consisted of a star and stripe representing a state and there were 13. The red color represents zeal and valor whereas the white color signifies purity, hope and cleanliness of life. The blue color stands for justice, loyalty, truth and sincerity.
